Ride Rules and Standards

New To the Group?

TAB welcomes all new riders, and we are ready to help you if you are new to the sport. Check the calendar for ride descriptions and times. But if you are new to riding, or new to riding with a group, or just want to see what it’s all about, we can arrange a one-on-one ride with a TAB member to help you find the right group and learn the particulars of riding with a group. Questions? General Ride Policy

Each ride is led by a designated Ride Leader who is responsible for organizing the ride. Ultimately it is up to the Ride Leader – with the full support of TAB – to make all decisions concerning the conduct of the ride. All riders assume the risk of injury; all riders sign a waiver of liability.

Basic Bike Policy

All riders, whether new or old-timers, should follow these guidelines:

  • If you are a new rider, check in with the ride leader when you arrive.
  • If you are an old-timer, be welcoming of the new riders, assisting if necessary.
  • Ride an appropriate bike. Because TAB rides, for the most part, take place on roads and at a minimum average speed of 14-16 mph, commuter, city, cargo, cruiser, fat tire or mountain bikes are generally not appropriate. There are exceptions.
  • Be sure your bike is in good working order (tire pressure, lubed chain, working brakes, etc.).
  • Carry enough water!
  • Bring one or two extra tubes and the tools to change the tube. If you don't know how to change a tube, someone will help you.
  • Obey all Ohio laws and Metroparks regulations.
  • Be courteous to other riders.
  • Listen to and follow all instructions from your ride leader.
  • Don't push the pace beyond that stated or as instructed by your ride leader.

E-bike Policy

E-bikes are gaining popularity and are generally welcomed by TAB. However, because E-bikes and E-bike riders vary greatly, ride leaders may ask some quick questions about your E-bike and riding experience prior to a ride. Ultimately, for safety reasons, an E-bike's inclusion in a specific ride is at the discretion of the ride leader.

TAB allows the use of Class 1, 2, and 3 electric bicycles weighing less than 100 pounds on most club rides. Bikes must be appropriate for the scheduled ride.

Because TAB rides, for the most part, take place on roads and at a minimum average speed of 14-16 mph and a maximum average speed of 24 mph, commuter, city, cargo, cruiser, fat tire or mountain bikes are generally not appropriate. E-bikes which exceed 28 mph are not allowed.

Again, an E-bike may be excluded at the discretion of the ride leader if the rider does not comply with the following guidelines:

  • E-bikes should be appropriate for the posted average or rolling speed of each scheduled ride. The E-bike and rider should not be significantly slower or faster than the posted speed.
  • Riders should use the lowest comfortable assist level. Group rides are intended as groups of cyclists who largely ride at the same pace. E-bikes are not welcome to push the pace beyond that of the group.
  • Riders should be sure the battery is fully charged and will provide the assistance needed for the distance you intend to ride.
  • Use any throttle carefully to avoid sudden surges of speed.
  • E-bikes must meet all state and federal laws, as well as the policy of the Metroparks where ridden.

E-Bikes are classified below:

Class 1: is a motor that provides assistance only when its rider is pedaling and is limited to motor-assisted speeds of 20 miles per hour.

Class 2: is equipped with throttles and does not require human input to be propelled (though most do also offer pedal assistance). E-bikes in this category are still limited to motor-assisted speeds of 20 miles per hour.

Class 3: offers pedal assistance up to a maximum of 28 miles per hour.
